Thomas Gibson and Matthew Gray Gubler on TF1 News

Another Interview with Matthew Gray Gubler and Thomas Gibson from Monte-Carlo

By Gérard Clétil

Morceaux choisis.

All very at ease, the two heroes from the series criminal minds were in Monte-Carlo. Good words, smiles, complicity, an attitude that demark them from their sombre and serious characters. To the utmost happiness of their fans. Thomas Gibson had changed from his dark suit and tie for light colour shirt and sneakers, while Matthew Gray Gubler, like his character, keep a deconstructed appearance. Their press conference was sold out.

Isn’t too depressing to be part of a show like criminal minds which does have every week horrible murder stories?
Oh Yes! Before every shooting, the cast sit down around a table and do a table read of the script. At the end, everyone looks at each other, a heavy silence persist. And each time, one of us will ask if we could do a comedy.

A question to Thomas Gibson. Two episodes have been directed by Matthew. How is he as a director?
He’s simply excellent. Matthew is a great actor and a very good director with a bright future. I think that later he is going to be able to do both (acting and directing) with ease.

How do you explain the series success and longevity?

It’s funny to see series that is so dark and sinister having this much success. This can be explained by how the series is produced and also that the public is attracted by stories about crimes committed by serial killers. And, there is something that works between the actors. Have to say that, we did choose our characters; they have not been imposed to us, like it is usually done. I think this contributes to the series success…

There is a form of reality to the cases?
That is due to our consultant. James Clemente, retired Special Agent with the FBI. He is a recognised expert at the national level for cases dealing with sexual crimes. Clemente did work on cases and was consulted on thousands of violent and sexual cases and on cases that sexually victimised children. He did interrogated hundreds of victims and criminals. He also does testify as an expert and does conferences on the subject around the country and the world.

How did this idea to close every episode with a quote from a famous writer or great political leader came from?

It is a bit the series signature. The quotes give the tone and theme to the episodes. Sometime, it is use as a thread to the story or at time it will be found by the writers only at the end of filming.

Have you visited the FBI at Quantico?

(Answered by Thomas) Yes, I went for a whole day with my wife and kids. We were given a full visit. It was very interesting.

Who gets the most love letters?

Both actors looks at each other, smile, together, “Shemar”. Thomas Gibson takes out his phone and calls him. When he got him on the phone, tells him “Hi Shemar, Its Thomas and Matthew , we are at the festival in Monaco. It’s really you that gets the most love letters? You can answer us in all tranquility, it is just us, there are only about 60 journalists that are awaiting your answer…” Everyone in the room stars laughing!

Live from Monte-Carlo, while the series still those very well here, Thomas Gibson is here to promote Criminal Minds at the 51’ Festivale de la Télévision de Mont-Carlo. Many was awaiting the actor who is in the middle of renegotiating his contract to continue his role in the upcoming seven season.

Interviewed by puremedia.com, the actor talks about this situation and explain that he wishes to be back but that the negotiations are long and complicated. If he doesn’t say much on the arm strength, he does talks at large on the type of negotiations that goes in Hollywood, where the economic crisis is used as an excuse by the studios to refuse actors pay increase.

Thomas Gibson also talks about the dark side of the series, the absence of support from the critics or Mandy Patinkin leaving and the astonishing decisions that have pushed AJ Cook and Paget Brewster to leave the cast and then come back this season.

How are the negotiations for your return to the series?

Oh, I'm in negotiations? (Laughs) I hope we will reach an agreement. I'd like to continue because I feel it has not yet be said everything there is to say about the character.

I guess you can not talk about these negotiations in particular, but can you talk a little about this type of situation generally? I guess you already got into this situation in the past...

It's always a long process. We hope we will reach a fair medium, as in any negotiation in fact. And we always hope that both parties feel they have been treated fairly.

There is the impression that, in recent years, the studios have used the economic crisis to justify the wage cuts they require from the actors...

Yes, yes. But I know that the income generated by the studios and networks has seen an increase. So they have to explain where exactly is the economic crisis. Attention, I'm not talking about people in general, obviously the economy is bad for most consumers. But the studios and the networks are fairly resistant...

Mandy Patinkin left the show several years ago already, but he spoke of his difficulty in managing its very dark stories...

I worked with Mandy in the past and I'm not sure this is the reason for his departure, at least not the only reason. But with Mandy you never know though...

And you, it does not affect you, the darkness of the situations and stories?

It's fiction. It should be remembered, really realize that we can not stop criminals, it's not real blood on the floor. But we have to make it all believable as actors, so we put yourself in that situations. I do not know if Mandy remembered that it was all fiction.

Mandy Patinkin also played in Dead Like Me, and he left the show...

Yes, and he played in Chicago Hope with me long ago, and he also left the series. I do not want to say that he abandons everything he does along the way, but sometimes the facts speak for themselves!

The series works very well in the U.S., as NCIS, CSI, Mentalist... Why the police series work so well, in your opinion?

I think the police series will always work and what makes some work better than others, is that people get attached to a team, to the characters. It's about chemistry between the characters but also between the actors, of course. And I think for our part, we are very good at integrating criminal stories with stories of the characters. I think it's our secret.

But sometimes it does not, as was the case this season for the spin-off of Criminal Minds, CBS launched in mid-season and it's already canceled...

The stories were really similar, but perhaps there was something missing in the other aspect, the personal aspect. I think the spin-off failed to differentiate itself from the original. Maybe they did not take the time to prepare everything well, maybe all was not completely formed in the minds of the creators and writers. And then the expectations were very high for the series while we, when we arrived, were faced with Lost and nobody dared hope better than second place for us. And then finally, at the end of the season, finished ahead of Lost! We knew we were not the priority of the network but in the end the public found the series and that's what matters.

You mentioned the importance of the team and the success of the characters in the series. But there have been considerable changes in the team with the departures of AJ Cook and Paget Brewster. I guess they didn't ask you your opinion on the impact that their departures will have?

No, it's clear. They didn't ask anyone in fact. And that was the problem! I still don't understand why they did it. I've never seen any explanation to justify this movement, I think that there was no reason and it was an arbitrary decision. And it is obvious that the series has suffered! The arrival of Rachel Nichols was interesting, I think she did a great job and her character was promising, there were stories to tell. But she will not have the opportunity to develop because everything changes again. But she's a very good actress, I'm not worried for her. And I am delighted that the team is at full strength for the new season.

Did you express your doubts when you learned that AJ Cook and Paget Brewster would have to leave?

Yes. It's complicated because we do our best to respect the creative decisions. But this was not a creative decision. It was an arbitrary decision. We all have asked ourselves what could have gone through their minds, we do not really understand the logic.

And have your a say in the evolution of your character?

Yes! It's a real dialogue at that level. At the end of the first season, we had a meeting with the writers and the creator of the series and we discussed what we liked in our characters, what they liked us to do, inasmuch as it was good or bad. It has established a collaborative spirit and there is always a lot of dialogue on the set. I have even got to send articles I found interesting to the screenwriters. It's nice that we can discuss that. I've been involved in projects where there was too much respect for the writers. And of course I understand that. I did a lot of drama, lots of Shakespeare, so I know there is a reason to respect the author. But the players also have things to bring to the table most of the time. I think this series is better when we work more with each other.

The series is very dark, as it has been said. You compensate when you aren't acting? How would you describe the atmosphere on set?

Yes, the atmosphere is very light! We really love each other and it is very rare to have a team with so much understanding between the members. We are very close to each other, almost like a family. We spend a wonderful time together.

The series works well but is not really supported by the critics...

It is true that there would always be series that would have critical acclaim, and that's good for them. And if we could have 15 million viewers and be acclaimed by the critics, I'd take both of course. But I prefer the audience. I stopped reading reviews a long time ago. Sometimes I come across an article by chance... I always say that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but it does not imply a right to be taken seriously. In the end, if 14 million people follow us, that's enough.

Yesterday, Felicity Huffman explained that in her view, all TV series had a deadline. If Criminal Minds lasted 10, 15 years and you had the feeling that your character has reached the end of his story, would you leave the series?

Yes, without a doubt. I agree with her, but TV series can last long, but instead, actors always are driven by the scenarios, must remain as far as they can. But I know that one of the things that appeals to players is change and the opportunity to do different things. It also plays a role in such decisions.

Thomas Gibson and Matthew Gray Gubler face the Press

From E!Online

Criminal Minds fans, you're gonna want to read this story.

Stars Thomas Gibson and Matthew Gray Gubler talked to reporters at the Monte-Carlo TV Festival today and were more than open about the impact of this year's backstage turmoil, not to mention the cast crisis that's currently ongoing. In case you haven't heard, CBS and Thomas Gibson appear to be an impasse in negotiations to bring the show's lead character back for season seven.

Gibson brought us up-to-date on the talks—and jokingly suggested a certain infamous actor replace Hotch as BAU team leader:

Q&A With Criminal Minds Star Thomas Gibson

Thomas, how are contract negotiations going, will Hotch be back next season?
I hope so, that's all I really can tell you. I am just hopeful we can work something out.

Are you getting close to finalizing something, doesn't shooting begin next month?
That's what they tell me.

If, God forbid, Hotch leaves, who do you think should replace him in the division?
Charlie Sheen. He's free, you know.

Q&A With Criminal Minds Star Matthew Gray Gubler

Do you think that Hotch will be back next year?
I honestly have no idea, I hope so. I love Thomas, I think Hotch is important to the show but I don't know, man. Hollywood is a strange place. I was raised as a real worker, you know, you get out and get a real job. In Hollywood it's all about negotiations and contracts so I don't know how this will turn out. I hope he is back.

What will the show be like if Hotch doesn't come back? Who will take over as head of the division?
Emily, I think, would take over as the chief, or Joe Montegna. I don't know, we do have a lot of characters. I don't know what they'd do. It would suck but they'd figure something out.

Coming from your background of "real workers" how did you adjust to Hollywood?
I am an eternal optimist. To me the fact that I get to entertain people is what matters the most to me. All I have ever wanted to do is entertain people and so I try not to think about that other part of it. I focus on the simplicity of it.

What do you think about Paget Brewster coming back after the contract/budget drama this year?
We lost her and A.J. Cook for no reason at all, on just on a whim, and that is sort of offensive to me because they're my friends, and they did a good job, and the fans liked them. At the same time I understand that we are all grownups and six years ago we signed contracts that said they could fire us. So while I don't like it, I think there are bigger things to worry about in life. Japan, for example had a huge hurricane and has a nuclear mess on its hands.

Did it cause tension on the set?
No, there's no tension but it makes it harder because for six years we've functioned as a unit and then suddenly it's different. These are my best friends in life, these actors, so losing them changed everything. And so I'm so glad that the band is back together now. I hope that Thomas doesn't leave. I think Rachel [Nichols] will leave. Which is sad, she's a nice girl it was a tough position she came into but like I said it's a strange situation, it's Hollywood. But I know that just because she's not on the show doesn't mean I won't talk t her, she's a friend and I know I'll speak with her on the weekends. All I know is we're going to try to keep on maintaining. The spirit on set is very jovial. I think because it's so dark we have to find things to laugh about.

Does that darkness ever overwhelm you and how do you deal with it?
Yes, I'm sort of a Method actor. We have a month off and during this month I turn back into my real self and I realize the 11 months of the year we film the show really affects my mind. The only way I know how to do something, as cheesy as it sounds, is to become that character and it affects me in a not so healthy way. It does kind of make me crazy. I am an optimist and I try to think that the light will always prevail in any situation so it doesn't really make me sad about humanity because I think deep down everybody is full of love and light. But the show does get to you after a period of time, it has to. I know it got to Mandy Patinkin (who played Jason Gideon), too—very much so. To do a good job it really has to affect you.

Still No Contract for Thomas Gibson

From Deadline Hollywood

Exactly one month before CBS' Criminal Minds is scheduled to start production on its upcoming 7th season, there is still no deal for co-star Thomas Gibson. And word is that talks between the actor and CBS have stalled. That is creating an issue for the series' writers who convened at the beginning of last week to break stories and work on scripts for next season. Gibson's character, Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner, has been key to the show's storylines, so it would be difficult to map out next season without knowing if he will be back. Expectation is that a deal will eventually be made as the show is looking for cast stability after the drama surrounding co-stars A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster and Rachel Nichols this past season. Despite not having a deal, Gibson has been fulfilling all Criminal Minds obligations. He mingled with international buyers at the LA Screenings and is currently in Europe. Along with Criminal Minds co-star Matthew Gray Gubler he will represent the show at the Monte Carlo TV festival, which starts tomorrow, and will also participate in a press junket in London
